Learn how a Business Administration Diploma can provide a foundation for continued education and how an associate degree can build on those skills.
Business education does not always have to begin with a long-term degree commitment. For some students, earning a diploma first can provide focused training in foundational business skills while leaving the option to continue their education later.
At Rockford Career College, students can begin with the Business Administration Diploma and, if they meet admission requirements and decide additional education aligns with their goals, continue into the Business Administration Associate of Applied Science degree-completion program.
Starting With a Business Administration Diploma
RCC’s Business Administration Diploma is designed to be completed in eight months and requires 53 quarter credits. The program is delivered 100% online, allowing students to complete coursework without regularly traveling to campus.
The curriculum introduces students to areas of business such as communication, accounting, customer service, technology, and business operations. These foundational skills may help students prepare to pursue entry-level business-related opportunities in a variety of industries.
Earning the diploma can also serve another purpose: establishing a foundation for students who may later decide to continue their business education.
Why Continue From a Diploma to an Associate Degree?
Career goals can change as students gain education and professional experience. Someone who initially wants focused preparation for an entry-level position may later become interested in developing additional skills associated with leadership, management, or broader business responsibilities.
Continuing from a diploma to an associate degree provides an opportunity to expand on previously developed business knowledge rather than starting over.
At RCC, the Business Administration Associate of Applied Science degree-completion program builds on foundational business education with additional study in areas such as leadership, finance, human resources, marketing, and organizational planning.
These subjects can help students develop a broader understanding of how organizations operate and make business decisions. Additional education may also be useful for individuals interested in pursuing positions with greater responsibility as their careers develop.
How RCC’s Diploma-to-Degree Pathway Works
RCC’s Business Administration A.A.S. is structured as a degree-completion program for students who have already completed qualifying business-related education.
The degree requires 102 total quarter credits. For students entering with the required 53 business-related credits, the degree-completion portion is designed to take approximately seven months. A student who completes RCC’s eight-month Business Administration Diploma and then continues directly into the A.A.S. may therefore complete the diploma-to-degree sequence in approximately 15 months when progressing as designed.
Admission to the degree-completion program is not automatic. Applicants must have a business-related diploma or certificate, a minimum 2.0 GPA, and submit transcripts for review to determine whether prior coursework meets RCC’s requirements.
Building Skills for Greater Responsibility
Career advancement can mean different things depending on a person’s industry, employer, experience, and goals. Additional business education does not guarantee a promotion or management position, but it can provide opportunities to develop knowledge that may be useful when pursuing roles with greater responsibility.
Degree-level business coursework can expand a student’s understanding of areas such as:
- Leadership and supervision.
- Financial management and budgeting.
- Human resources.
- Marketing and business development.
- Organizational planning and decision-making.

Combining this broader education with professional experience may help individuals prepare to pursue different responsibilities as their careers evolve.
Who Might Consider a Diploma-to-Degree Path?
A diploma-to-degree pathway may appeal to students who want to approach their education in stages. This could include individuals entering the business field for the first time, working adults balancing education with other responsibilities, career changers developing business skills, or diploma graduates who later decide they want additional education.
Because both RCC Business Administration programs are 100% online, students can complete coursework remotely. Courses are organized into five-week modules, typically allowing students to focus on two courses at a time.
