“Just because you took longer doesn't mean you failed.” This quote reminded Kameron Foster that it was not too late to achieve his professional goals. After enrolling in Rockford Career College's welding program, Kameron studied diligently and honed his welding skills in the on-campus lab. We are extremely proud of Kameron for accomplishing his dreams of graduating and beginning a new career!

What You Learn in a Welding Program

For each graduate of a program, we highlight three different courses. During the program, Kameron took courses such as: GMAW 2-G, 5-G Pipe Welds; SMAW Plate Certification; and Core Curriculum: Trade Skills.

In these courses, he learned about:

  • Setting up GMAW equipment for open-root V-groove welds; preparing for and making open-root V-groove welds on carbon steel pipe; and making open-root V-groove welds with GMAW equipment on pipe in the 2G and 5G positions
  • Passing AWS D1.1 code plate welding using backing strips as well as making multiple pass groove welds with backing on carbon steel plate in various positions using E7018 electrodes
  • Mathematical operations used in construction; the metric system; geometry; construction drawings; solutions to problems involving the measurement of lines, area, volume, weights, angles, pressure, vacuum, and temperature; and NEC® requirements and procedures for proper grounding and bonding

How Our Graduate Became a Welder

Like Kameron, you too could become a welder in just a matter of months and start your career journey in this interesting and necessary profession. Our welding program prepares students via hands-on training in the lab. Students become proficient in various welding types, including: gas, shielded metal arc (STICK), metal inert gas (MIG), flux core, and tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding. The College also pays for students to test for a welding process to earn a Certified Welding Inspection report with the American Welding Society.
