We Proudly Present Diagnostic Medical Sonography Graduate Summer Richard

“The secret of change is to focus all your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” This quote from Dan Millman's book Way of the Peaceful Warrior inspired Summer Richard to concentrate her efforts on building a new career.1 She then enrolled in Rockford Career College's Associate of Applied Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. We are so proud of Summer for applying herself, graduating with her associate degree, and beginning the career she had always wanted.

What You Learn in a Diagnostic Medical Sonography AAS Program

Our career programs are designed to provide students with relevant, in-demand skills. Our AAS programs go beyond by allowing students to complete an advanced level of course work in their chosen field and develop general education skill sets in areas such as English, history, and math. For each graduate of a program, we highlight three different courses. During the program, Summer took courses such as: Sonography of Superficial Structures,  Obstetrical Sonography, and Basic Health Care Skills with CPR Certification.

In these courses, she learned about:

  • The anatomy and physiology of the breast, male reproductive system, neonatal head, neonatal hip and gastrointestinal tract, thyroid and parathyroid, and muscular system; associated pathological conditions; normal and abnormal sonographic appearances; organ protocols; optimization of image acquisition; case study presentations and discussions; laboratory activities; and observation and participation in the clinical environment
  • The sonographic appearance of second and third trimester pregnancies, proper measuring techniques for dating the pregnancy, recognition of both maternal and fetal complications, identification of fetal anomalies, assessment of fetal well-being, relating to the family, protocols, optimization of image acquisition, case study presentations and discussion, laboratory activities, and observation and participation in the clinical environment
  • The different health care systems and agencies; personal responsibilities; promotion of safety; infection control; vital signs; and CPR certification

In addition to sonography-related subjects, Summer took courses such as College Math and Written Communications to complete associate degree requirements.

How Our Graduate Became a Sonographer

Like Summer, you too could become a diagnostic medical sonographer and start your career journey in this interesting and necessary profession. Upon successful completion of the program, you could acquire the RT (S) (Registered Technologist-Sonography) in Abdomen and Obstetrics by passing the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) exam.
