DATE On March 29, 2022

Ready for a new career, Felicia Redd decided not to let any obstacles stand in her way. She enrolled in Rockford Career College's diagnostic medical sonography program, studied hard, and developed her skills through hands-on training in the lab. Completing externships at a local healthcare clinic allowed Felicia to gain real-world experience before graduation. Finally, Felicia graduated from the program with her associate degree. We are extremely proud of her for pursuing her passion and starting a new life as a sonographer.

What You Learn in a Diagnostic Medical Sonography AAS Program

Our career programs are designed to provide students with relevant, in-demand skills. Our AAS programs go beyond by allowing students to complete an advanced level of course work in their chosen field and develop general education skill sets in areas such as English, history, and math. For each graduate of a program, we highlight three different courses. During the program, Felicia took courses such as: Abdomen Sonography I, Gynecological Sonography, and Medical Terminology.

In these courses, she learned about:

  • The anatomy and physiology of the digestive system including the GI tract with emphasis on the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas; anatomical variants; associated pathological conditions; normal and abnormal sonographic appearances; organ protocols; optimization of image acquisition; case study presentations; hands-on scanning in the imaging lab; and observation and participation in the clinical environment
  • The anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive system to include the uterus, ovaries, breast, and first trimester pregnant pelvis with discussion of dating the pregnancy, associated pathological conditions, normal and abnormal sonographic appearances, and organ protocols including endovaginal; optimization of image acquisition; case study presentations; hands-on scanning in the imaging lab; and observation and participation in the clinical environment
  • Medical terminology related to the major body structures/systems and functions as well as  terminology used in diagnosis, treatment, and procedures for each disease process

In addition to sonography-related courses, Felicia took courses such as Oral Communications and Introduction to Physics to complete associate degree requirements.
