Pursue Your Dream

“Isn't it time to do something you love?” The television hummed another advertisement, but this time I did not tune out. I watched the Rockford Career College commercial play, the sound of my drumming fingers reverberating through the otherwise vacant house.

My six-year-old son headed off to first grade today, and his sister was back in school, too. I thought the change of pace would be nice, but the emptiness left me contemplating. I had always wanted to become a medical assistant. I would have trained for it years ago, but I sacrificed pursuing a career to raise my family. My phone's glow dimmed as I stared at the RCC website. Should I?

I opened up the Request Information form. It couldn't hurt to ask.

Doreen called me shortly after that. “Would you like to tour the school?” She was so welcoming that I couldn't refuse. It turned out that the students and instructors were equally inviting and helpful in answering my questions. What stunned me most was the class schedule: The medical assistant program was Monday through Thursday, 9 am to 2:30 pm (there is also an evening option available).

It's possible, I realized. I could go to school and be back in time to pick up my children from the bus.

Doreen introduced me to Elizabeth from financial aid. After showing Elizabeth my tax returns and other financial documents, she determined that I qualified for financial aid. Everything was falling right into place! Next, the medical assistant program chair discussed the ten-month program with me. I would be taking relevant courses like cardiac care and minor surgical procedures, not history or art. I would also have hands-on training and develop interpersonal skills vital for professional success.

Still, I wondered, will there be a job for me when I graduate? Phyllis from the career services department showed me the numbers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of opportunities for medical assistants is expected to grow by twenty-nine percent over the next decade.1 Phyllis explained that her department would help with professional development through resume-building workshops, mock interviews, networking opportunities, and job placement. Employers constantly offer jobs to Rockford Career College graduates because they have been satisfied with the results of the school's programs.

Classes start every five weeks, so I can begin on October 8th and finish by the summer. Even though I was nervous at first, I'm sure this is the right decision for me.

Programs run Monday – Thursday 9am – 2:30pm*
