While it is common for children to set future career goals, few adults can say they actually turned their dreams into realities. Monica is a Certified Surgical Technologist and Surgical Technology Program Chair, is one of those determined few. Here is her story:

I became a surgical technologist because of the book The Value of Sharing: The Story of the Mayo Brothers. This was my favorite book as a child. It told great tales about William and Charles Mayo and their life-saving efforts to help people in their hometown. I knew from a very young age that I would work in surgery and, eventually, at The Mayo Clinic.

In summer 2007, I gained my surgical technology certification. After quickly packing up my husband and children, I moved to Rochester, MN to start my surgical technologist career at The Mayo Clinic! I could not believe that I had finally reached my goal.

Eventually, I moved back home to Ohio so my children would be closer to family. Although this meant leaving The Mayo Clinic, there were many other career opportunities waiting for me. My next job was at The Ohio State University Medical Center. While working there, I earned the position of clinical coordinator for the surgical technology program at a college in Dayton. I quickly became the program director as well. Serving in this capacity helped me discover my love for the academic side of surgical technology. Today, I am a member of the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST).

I cannot decide which day was the best one as a surgical technologist because there were so many great moments. Hard work and passion for the field allowed me to become successful and enrich many patients' lives. Choosing surgical technology as my career was the perfect decision for me.
